A. Instructor Program (IP)
The Instructor Program is comprised of three phases. The first two phases are recommended, but the third phase is required.

The first phase is called the Instructor Training Seminar (ITS). Its purpose is to teach the principles required to be an instructor. This phase has a minimum time requirement of three days, and can be longer at the discretion of the Instructor Administrator. The days do not have to be contiguous.

The second phase is called the Instructor Apprenticeship (IA). Its purpose is to allow the instructor candidate the opportunity to practice and gain experience in applying the principles which were learned in the ITS. This is accomplished by teaching to one or more actual students all lessons from the Apprenticeship Checklist. It is recommended that this be done under the supervision of two unaffiliated Instructors, however one Instructor is acceptable.

The required third phase is called the Instructor Evaluation (IE). Its purpose is to verify that the candidate is qualified to be an instructor. This phase is a minimum one day process that could be longer at the discretion of the Instructor Administrator. The Instructor Candidate must fulfill each of the following requirements from the Instructor Program Evaluation Checklist:

Provide a current Red Cross First Aid card

Passed the Fundamentals of Instruction (FOI) exam before or during the IE; this exam can be administered by an USHGA Instructor Administrator, or by the FAA, ASC or USUA; if this exam is not passed, the time frame for retesting is at the discretion of the Instructor Administrator

Passed the instructor written exam

Submitted completed lesson plans

Passed ground school presentations

Passed practical instruction presentations

Passed flight demonstrations

Signed the USHGA Waiver.

If an Instructor Candidate has not attended an ITS and apprenticed, and does not pass the Instructor Evaluation, he or she must attend an ITS, or apprentice, or both, at the discretion of the Instructor Administrator, prior to being evaluated again.

B. Instructor Re-evaluation
The Instructor Re-evaluation is for instructor re-certification and/or Instructor rating upgrade from Basic to Advanced. This is a two day process. The first day is Professional Development/Continuing Education. The second day is evaluation, similar to the third phase of the IP above. For an Advanced Instructor candidate, the requirements will be for Intermediate and Advanced level pilot training. A first time Advanced Instructor candidate must show six students taught and rated to the Novice level. The Instructor Re-evaluation Candidate must fulfill each of the following requirements from the Instructor Program Re-evaluation Checklist:

Provide a current Red Cross First Aid card

Passed the Fundamentals of Instruction (FOI) exam before or during the IE; this exam can be administered by an USHGA Instructor Administrator or by the FAA, ASC or USUA; (this exam only needs to be passed once); if this exam is not passed, the time frame for retesting is at the discretion of the Instructor Administrator

Possess a current Intermediate or higher pilot rating for the Basic Instructor rating or possess a current Advanced or higher pilot rating for the Advanced Instructor rating

Passed the instructor written exam

Submitted completed lesson plans

Passed ground school presentations

Passed practical instruction presentations

Passed flight demonstrations

Signed the USHGA Waiver.
