Viruses, Trojans & Worms

The Sasser Worm has been hitting local customers pretty hard this last week. Two steps should be taken by all. First is to update your Windows with the latest patches from Microsoft. Second, if your anti virus cannot find or remove it, go to this link and download the Sasser Removal Tool. This should clean out your system and protect it from a reoccurance.

A new worm (which is like a virus, except it does not transmit itself through email, but instead scans the Internet looking for vulnerable computers to infect) has appeared in recently - it is called the MSBlast worm.  But there are others, both historical and future that are very similar.  It takes advantage of a security hole present in un-patched Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP machines. Microsoft fixed the hole back in the middle of July, but if you have not had your computer do a "Windows Update" since then, you are probably vulnerable to this worm.

In the following order, you should first update your Windows software with the updates available at (Regardless of this worm, you should try to visit that site at least every couple of weeks in order to keep Windows updated.) Microsoft will scan your computer and determine which updates are needed for your system and report them back to you. You should at minimum install all the critical updates.

After those are finished, and you have restarted your computer you should then update any anti-virus software you have and then scan the computer for viruses. If you do not have any anti-virus software, there is a specific software tool made by Symantec (the makers of Norton Anti-virus) that will scan your computer for this one particular worm. It is available on this page HERE. After that, you should be protected from this worm. If you would like to read a bit more about this worm and the problems it can cause, click HERE for some various news stories about it.

But get yourself protected folks - because if you are not - you are very likely to become part of the problem if you are not already.
